After the overwhelming love you showed me on my first standup comedy video, I’m back with my second video, straight from the heart of middle-class life, and I’m sure you’ll find it funny. This time, I take a closer look at what it’s like growing up in a middle-class family, especially in West Delhi—from stories of stolen mobile phones to uncles who meet you after years just to say, “Bohot bade ho gaye.” In this new stand-up comedy video, I also talk about how it’s always middle-class uncles who seem the most invested in discussing the country’s economic situation, even though they’re still figuring out their own finances. And then there’s that unique middle-class fear: What if we stay middle class forever? Or worse, what if the Income Tax Department comes knocking for a raid? My father, who works is a government employee, has the same worry. Of course, chasing big dreams in a middle-class household has its own share of comedy. When I started stand up comedy, my father’s biggest concern wasn’t how much I was earning or how popular I was becoming—it was how late I was coming home every night. Priorities, right? Then there’s the joy (and slight trauma) of family gatherings. If you’re middle class, you’ve surely been asked to show your talent in front of guests. I’ve been through it too. My mum used to call me “Chhota Mohammed Rafi” and I’d be made to sing while relatives sat around, judging and clapping awkwardly. Middle-class families keep you protected and sheltered until you’re 17—and the moment you turn 18, they’re suddenly asking, “Why haven’t you cleared the IIT exam yet?” No pressure at all! Finally, I close the comedy video with a little joke about Thomas Alva Edison that you definitely won’t want to miss.
